My feedback for assignment five can be read here.

I had a very constructive Zoom call with my tutor, which is true of all the discussions I’ve had with my tutor on this unit, where we discussed the assignment and also preparing for assessment. The main points to come out of the discussion were some issues with lighting on a couple of the images, the need to post on my learning log about collaborating with the sitters, what worked, what didn’t and what I would change if I did something similar again; and lastly some discussion about how to present the work.

In the comments for assignment one my tutor suggested using flash when taking portraits indoors and I have used them on a couple of assignments. I was initially reluctant to experiment with flash as it seemed too complicated but with his encouragement and some youtube videos I have felt confident enough to experiment. The key phrase in the feedback for this assignment was ‘learn through doing’, I need to experiment with a key light and fill or a key and reflector so that I can confidently create different lighting styles. This is something I will work on independently.

In my reflections post about this assignment I did not really cover the process of collaborating with the sitters to produce the work. My tutor and I discussed this, particularly the process of getting them to produce the text I used, but also my decsions about where to photograph them. My tutor suggested writing a separate post that captured my thoughts about this process and I will post about his once I have had a chance to get my thoughts together.

The final element of our discussion abouth the assignment was about how to display the work. This was in part a general discussion but it also fed into our discussion on submitting work for digital assessment. Again, the key message from my tutor was to experiment and try new approaches. He advised that at this stage, experimentation and the process of trialling new formats was more important than the final result. I am going to try producing a photo book of either this assignment or assignment four and will try videoing the outcome and use the results as part of my assessment submission.
