Assignment 5 – Your inspiration – alternative approach

One of the ideas I had for this assignment was to look at the part of the river Cam that I go running along and as part of my research I looked at the bridges that I pass. One of the bridges, Victoria Avenue bridge was built in 1889-90 and linked was was then the village of Chesterton to the city of Cambridge. This got me thinking about how the city has expanded over time and in particular how the city is now expanding in the south towards the village of Trumpington. The expansion of housing, along with the bio-medical campus, can be seen if you travel by train south towards London. I wanted to explore this part of the city, that I am unfamiliar with, that in time may expand to subsume the village of Trumpington which may become another suburb of the city just as Chesterton has.

I spent an hour or so wandering around the area taking pictures that capture something about this part of the city to see if it would be a worth considering as an alernative subject for assignment 5.

I am pleased with the images and I think they do capture something about this part of the city; the colour of the brick, the lack of pitched roofs, the somewhat self-conscious stylistic flourishes and the liminal feel to the area. I have, however, decided to not to develop this work any further as, although interesting, it does not feel personal enough.
