There are many challenges that the restrictions on movement the coronavisrus outbreak has created and taking photographs is a very minor one. I wanted to somehow capture the impact of the extraordinary times we find ourselves in but did not know how to do this whilst at the same time complying with govenment instructions around minimising going outdoors and maintaining social distancing. In the end an idea came to me whilst exercising and dog-walking as I was struck by the number of discarded gloves, and occassionally face masks, that I came across.
I think my typology serves as a metaphor for the UK government’s response to coronavirus, useful ideas but poorly implemented. I wonder about the mindset of the people who discarded these items, they were concerned enough about coronavirus to take steps to try and reduce their chances of catching it but not concerned enough to to take a minute to think about how to dispose of them safely and thereby reduce the risk, however small, of infecting someone else.
I wil continue to take my camera with me as I walk the dog and will expand the series if I come across more intersesting items.
